Daniela*, her six children and her partner came to Washington from their country of origin due to desperate circumstances. She and her partner were unable to find work, didn’t have enough food or money for their children, and were on the verge of becoming homeless. They faced discrimination due to their illiteracy and the color of their skin.
Once in Washington, Daniela and her family found out about KIAC through other families in the community who have received services. The doctors at KIAC’s medical clinic were able to diagnose and treat Daniela for an ongoing medical concern. KIAC’s family services team helped Daniela and her family by negotiating medical bills and completing paperwork. Daniela in turn has participated with KIAC in advocating for expanded access to healthcare and insurance for immigrants in Washington state. Daniela and her family also received a WIRF pandemic-relief payment through KIAC’s outreach, which helped keep them afloat when things were stretched with finances due to Covid.
As Daniela says, “We will be forever grateful for KIAC’s services and the amazing people that have helped us during our tough times. THANK YOU KIAC! Keep doing what you are doing for the communities, and I hope more people come together to support KIAC to grow and succeed in every aspect of its mission!”

On October 10, KIAC held our first in-house medical clinic! All 11 appointment slots were filled and our volunteer team was excited to be back in action! Plus, our partners at Peninsula Community Health Services were present with a Navigator who helped a client sign up for insurance and was available for scheduling referrals!

We’re looking for an attorney who specializes in workers rights. Recently here at KIAC, we have seen an increase in the number of clients needing legal support for workplace issues and potential workers rights violations. We are seeking to expand our network of support and are looking for an attorney who can help answer questions and help our clients navigate potential options. If you or someone you know is knowledgable on workers’ rights and interested in volunteering with KIAC or providing consultation support, please email KIAC’s Family Services Director Annika.

Shop local this holiday season while supporting your immigrant neighbors! KIAC is so grateful to three local bookstores for holding book drives for our upcoming Holiday Celebration for immigrant families!
Eagle Harbor Book Co. in Bainbridge Island, Ballast Book Co. in Bremerton, and Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo are all hosting book drives and have a variety of children’s books for all ages available in Spanish to purchase.
Donations will be delivered to KIAC before our upcoming Holiday Celebration on December 9, so be sure to check them out!

KIAC team members have been out in the community a lot this past month! We stopped by the groundbreaking for the new wing at St. Michael Medical Center and attended the Olympic College Foundation Community Luncheon. We learned more about the candidates for Bremerton City Council at the “Eggs and Issues” event hosted by the Greater Kitsap Chamber. Plus, we attended a panel on Constructive Conflict, hosted by the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights.
It’s been so great learning about other organizations and what’s happening in our community, while spreading the word about the work we do at KIAC!
Daniela*, sus seis hijos y su pareja llegaron a Washington desde su país de origen debido a circunstancias desesperadas. Ella y su pareja no pudieron encontrar trabajo, no tenían suficiente comida ni dinero para sus hijos y estaban a punto de quedarse sin hogar. Se enfrentaron a discriminación por su analfabetismo y el color de su piel.
Una vez en Washington, Daniela y su familia conocieron KIAC a través de otras familias de la comunidad que habían recibido servicios. Los doctores de la clínica médica de KIAC pudieron diagnosticar y tratar a Daniela por un problema de salud continuo.
El equipo de servicios familiares de KIAC ayudó a Daniela y su familia negociar facturas médicas y completar trámites. Daniela a su vez ha participado con KIAC en la promoción de un mayor acceso a atención médica y seguro para inmigrantes en el estado de Washington. Daniela y su familia también recibieron un pago de alivio por la pandemia (“WIRF”) a través del alcance de KIAC, lo que los ayudó a mantenerse a flote cuando las finanzas se vieron presionadas debido a Covid.
Como dice Daniela: “Estaremos eternamente agradecidos por los servicios de KIAC y por las personas maravillosas que nos han ayudado durante nuestros tiempos difíciles. ¡GRACIAS KIAC! ¡Continúe haciendo lo que está haciendo por las comunidades y espero que más personas se unan para apoyar a KIAC para que crezca y tenga éxito en todos los aspectos de su misión!”

¡El 10 de octubre, KIAC celebró nuestra primera clínica médica interna! ¡Se llenaron los 11 espacios para citas y nuestro equipo de voluntarios estaba emocionado de volver a la acción! Además, nuestros socios de Peninsula Community Health Services estuvieron presentes con un navegador que ayudó a un cliente a inscribirse en un seguro y estuvo disponible para programar referencias.

Recientemente aquí en KIAC, hemos visto un aumento en la cantidad de clientes que necesitan apoyo legal para problemas laborales y posibles violaciones de los derechos de los trabajadores. Buscamos ampliar nuestra red de apoyo y buscamos un abogado que pueda ayudar a responder algunas preguntas y ayudar a nuestros clientes a explorar las posibles opciones que tienen. ¡Los miembros del equipo KIAC han estado mucho en la comunidad el mes pasado! Pasamos por la inauguración de la nueva ala del Centro Médico St. Michael y asistimos al almuerzo comunitario de la Fundación Olympic College. Aprendimos más sobre los candidatos al Concejo Municipal de Bremerton en el evento “Huevos y Cuestiones” organizado por la Cámara Greater Kitsap. Además, asistimos a un panel sobre conflictos constructivos, organizado por el Consejo de Derechos Humanos.
